Good news- Student PSEA received a grant

Hurray!

We received notification that Gannon University Student PSEA (Pennsylvania State Education Association) has been awarded the CLASS grant we applied for from the National Education Association.   NEA is providing almost $1,000.00 to purchase costumes that 4th graders can wear when reenacting “A Day in the 1880s”.  Gannon Student  PSEA members will also create educational posters for Hornby School Museum volunteers to use when groups of students visit and may volunteer to present the material themselves.

From the press release:

The Student Pennsylvania State Education Association at Gannon University is volunteering to provide support for an educational program at the only one-room school house left intact in east Erie County, Pennsylvania.  The Hornby School Museum, listed on the National Register of Historic Sites, offers “A Day at School in 1880s” to children ages 8 to 12 who attend local schools or who participate in local community groups.  The Museum is located in the Wattsburg Area School District.  The teachers association in the District, Wattsburg Education Association, worked with the Gannon students to develop learning modules.

Gannon University students provide costumes for young visitors to Hornby to wear and learning modules to enhance the experience of participating in the curriculum of the 1880s-- penmanship, spelling, and having physical education through singing with body movement. The project was funded in part with a CLASS (Community Learning Through America’s Schools) Grant from the Nation Education Association’s Student Program.

CLASS projects are taking place nationwide.  Since 1989 college students on more that 200 campuses has become involved supporting children. CLASS projects are NEA student members working with others for community improvement.  At the same time the students are growing as professionals.

The NEA student program is a grassroots organization that serves more than 55,000 teacher candidates nationwide.
