New Literacy Program

We are pleased to announce the opening of the Gannon University Literacy Outreach Program.  In the Fall 2013 semester, eight students, under the direction of Outreach Coordinator Melinda Holliday, will provide extended schooling in a variety of Diocesan and public school settings.  We are pleased to provide the community with these services and congratulate the students who were selected to participate in this program.

Job Posting: Immediate need for Secondary Science (Erie, PA)

Collegiate Academy, located in Erie, PA, is in need of a long-term substitute teacher for a faculty member who will be out on maternity leave.  The successful candidate will be responsible for biology, chemistry, and environmental science, although the candidate would not necessarily have to be certified in all three.  The school year begins Monday, August 26 for students and the position starts immediately.  Contact Dr. Tammie Smith, Collegiate Dean or Rick Schneider, Associate Dean with inquiries.

News from the SOE

Welcome back to a new academic year!  Welcome to our new freshmen!!  Congratulations to all of our employed graduates from the class of 2013!  We are so proud of each of you!

The new year brings many changes!  Please congratulate Dr. Kathleen Kingston, former Director of Graduate Programs in the School of Education, on her promotion.  Dr. Kingston is now the Associate Provost for the University and we wish her well!

We also wish a wonderful retirement to our colleague Dr. Fran Grandinetti!  Dr. G. was the driving force for many years behind our MEd cohort programs.  Although we are saddened by his retirement, we wish him well in the sunny south with his family.

Mr. Larry Kessler, formerly our Partnership liaison, will be stepping in to take over Dr. Grandinetti’s position.  Along with some restructuring and our new online graduate programs, Mr. Kessler has a more than full schedule!  We wish him well in his new position.

In the undergraduate programs we wish Mrs. Kathy Keys a wonderful retirement and are pleased to welcome Mrs. Sheri Kurczewski as our Early Childhood mathematics methods specialist.  Mrs. Kurczewski has classroom teaching and administrative experience in the Erie area and is already learning how to use our Smart Table to enhance learning.  Please extend a warm welcome to her when you have a chance.

New positions bring changes in office locations as well.  Be sure to visit the School of Education to see how we’ve rearranged our office spaces.

Mrs. Janice Whiteman will continue in the position of Interim Director for the School of Education.  We are happy to have her experience and leadership as we venture into new territory with our programs.  With increased responsibilities, Mrs. Whiteman will be assisted by Mr. George Sucha in the student teaching supervision and seminar.  We are happy to welcome Mr. Sucha back from his short-lived retirement!

In curriculum news, you can now pick up a Minor in Special Education and Diversity!  This will provide you with more Special Education coursework but will not result in a dual-major or certification.  It’s ideal for those students who seek extra preparation but don’t wish to have the Special Education certificate.  Ask your Education advisor for more information this fall!

Also, our Secondary Education programs have been restructured and incoming freshmen will be placed in the new programs.  The changes will provide education coursework earlier in the four-year plan and emphasize secondary activities outside of class to a greater degree.  These changes were made in response to requests from students and faculty as well as in response to changes in Pennsylvania Department of Education guidelines.  These are exciting changes!

Soon you’ll hear even more news, including an opportunity to study in Ireland!  To learn more, all current education majors should mark their calendars for September 10 at 11 am.  This will be our first all-education meeting for the year and you won’t want to miss it!

Finally, keep your eyes on your email.  There will be many opportunities announced over the next few weeks and you don’t want to miss any!

Remember to stop by and say hi if you’re in Palumbo!

U.S. Foreign Affairs Agency-Spring 2014 Internships

Dear Students:

The leading U.S. foreign affairs agency responsible for advancing freedom for the benefit of the American people and the international community with over 265 locations overseas and throughout the United States is seeking interns for spring 2014. This program offers undergraduate and graduate U.S. citizen students the opportunity to participate in full-time (40 hours/week), 10-week, unpaid internships that provide intensive educational and professional experience within America’s principle foreign affairs agency.  Course credit may be available with approval.  Internships are available at many of the over 265 U.S. embassies, consulates and missions to international organizations around the world, as well as Washington, D.C. and other locations throughout the U.S.  Participants gain first-hand, hands-on experience, and learn the realities of working in – and with – Foreign and Civil Service professionals who are at the forefront of America’s diplomatic efforts.  Please note that the deadline to submit completed applications is July 1, 2013.  (Students are encouraged to apply early.)
Responsibilities (duties will vary based on location and office):
  • Participate in meetings with senior level U.S. government or foreign government officials;
  • Draft, edit, or contribute to cables, reports, communications, talking points, or other materials used by policy makers in furthering U.S. foreign policy objectives;
  • Help organize and support events, including international and/or multi-lateral meetings and conferences on critical global issues;
  • Contribute to the management and administration of the agency and America’s foreign policy; and
  • Engage directly with U.S. or foreign audiences to promote U.S. foreign policy and improve understanding of U.S. culture and society.
Eligibility Requirements:
·         U.S. citizenship
·         Undergraduates (juniors and seniors) and Graduate Students in various majors are eligible to apply (there are many opportunities in a wide variety of fields)
·         An applicant is considered a junior if he/she will have completed all sophomore credits (60 or more semester hours or 90 quarter hours) by the time the internship begins and will be entering at least the junior year immediately following completion of the internship
·         Minimum 2.5 GPA
·         Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance
·         Students placed overseas are responsibility for having medical insurance coverage that is valid abroad, to include medical evacuation and repatriation of remains coverage.
·         Students placed overseas are responsible for obtaining a U.S. passport with validity at least six (6) months beyond their proposed stay and a travel visa as required by the country.
Housing/Transportation information:
Housing is not provided for domestic program participants; students are responsible for identifying their own housing.  When serving abroad, many U.S. embassies and consulates make every effort to provide housing for students at no cost. However, because circumstances and post resources vary from country to country, housing is not guaranteed.  For domestic and placements abroad, travel expenses and all travel arrangements are the responsibility of the participant.
·         Regions where embassies/consulates often can provide housing: Africa, Latin America, Middle East, South and Central Asia, East Asia
·         Regions with limited opportunities for embassy/consulate housing: Western Europe
Interested students are asked to contact Cheryl Rink or Barbara Zarnick in the Center for Experiential Education at 871-7680 or via e-mail.  An approved resume and other supporting application documents are required.

Splash Lagoon Fun Day on April 14!

Want to have a little fun before it’s time to settle down for the end of the semester placements and finals?  Future Educators Association is hosting a social event at Splash Lagoon and we are inviting all Education Majors.  You are invited to join us for this event!!

Our event will be on Sunday, April 14th. The time is tentatively set from 1-5 pm and will include a pizza and pop party.  Splash Lagoon is 84 degrees year round and has a large wave pool, hot tubs, lazy river, and water slides.  The cost to attend is $20 (which is a reduction from the regular price of $29.95).  We request that you drop off a $5 deposit to save your space by Wednesday, March 20.  You can pay the other $15 any time before April 10.

We need your response and deposit by Wednesday, March 20th.  If you put down a deposit and then can't go, you are still required to pay $15 as we must pay for the number of reservations we made, not the actual attendance on the day of the event.

Email Lauren Bennett at bennett030@knights.gannon.edu to reserve your space.  You may leave your deposit (or full payment) with Lauren or Dr. Forbes.  Please place your deposit (or full payment) in a sealed envelope clearly labeled “Splash Lagoon” and your name.  In addition, although this is an event for education majors, we do have some limited space for non-education majors available.  Questions can be directed to Lauren or Dr. Forbes.

Hope you see you there!
