Paid Direct Care Internship

Dear Students:
 
A residential treatment facility in Zelienople, PA is seeking a Direct Care Intern for a paid, part-time position for summer 2012.
 
Responsibilities:
<![if !supportLists]>·         <![endif]>Provide therapeutic services to either children or teens that range in age from 6 to 18 years of age who have diagnosed with a mental health diagnosis within a residential setting, or care to adolescents and teens that range from 12 to 18 years of age within a Group Home setting. 
<![if !supportLists]>·         <![endif]>For Direct Care Interns within the Residential Treatment Facility guidance comes on a daily basis through a treatment plan that will help clients to develop the skills necessary to achieve a healthier life. 
<![if !supportLists]>·         <![endif]>For Direct Care Interns who work within the Group Home setting, this position provides guidance for continual emotional growth while helping each child to develop Life Skills that will lead to a life of independence.
 
Requirements: 
<![if !supportLists]>·         <![endif]>Working towards a bachelor's degree in psychology, sociology, nursing, education or a field in human services. 
<![if !supportLists]>·         <![endif]>Must have audio/visual/verbal activity to provide supervision for the clients and to perform essential job functions. 
<![if !supportLists]>·         <![endif]>Must possess verbal and written communication skills. 
<![if !supportLists]>·         <![endif]>Must be 21 years of age.
<![if !supportLists]>·         <![endif]>Must have the physical dexterity in order to assist in physical interventions as necessary.
<![if !supportLists]>·         <![endif]>Must complete and pass agency Crisis /Physical Intervention training.

Summer Environmental Education Internship

Dear Students:
A non-profit organization for environmental and outdoor education located in Jessup, Maryland is seeking graduate or undergraduate interns starting 6/4/12.  Applicants should have a demonstrated interest in the areas of education research, environmental education and/or environmental science. Days and times are flexible; this is unpaid, but the organization will work to assist interns to receive course credit with their school if possible.

The deadline to apply is May 11, 2012. 
Responsibilities:
<![if !supportLists]>·         <![endif]>Research current environmental education and education practices, Green Schools Program and new MD Environmental Literacy Standards
<![if !supportLists]>·         <![endif]>Take initiative on special projects and work occasional flexible work schedules

<![if !supportLists]>·         <![endif]>Data Quantification of environmental metrics, analyzing the projects undertaken by the schools and centers of the cohort of 2012 Maryland Green Schools to quantify the environmental impacts on energy use, water pollution, habitat, transportation, and healthy school environment, and input the data into National Geographic’s FieldScope, a GIS application.
<![if !supportLists]>·         <![endif]>Writing case studies of schools’ activities – focusing on how the program addressed a problem and benefited the school community.
<![if !supportLists]>·         <![endif]>Students Absenteeism study. Longitudinal study of student absenteeism rates for schools before and after becoming Maryland Green Schools to determine if the program has any impact.
<![if !supportLists]>·         <![endif]>Teacher Satisfaction Study _Anecdotal evidence exists showing greater teacher satisfaction in Maryland Green Schools. This would be a longitudinal study comparing teacher turnover rates in Maryland Green School to see if the program has an impact.
Qualifications:
<![if !supportLists]>·         <![endif]>Excellent writing skills
<![if !supportLists]>·         <![endif]>Microsoft Office and Internet proficiency
<![if !supportLists]>·         <![endif]>Excellent communication skills, comfort speaking on the phone and in person to schools, teachers, K-12 students, organization members and community partners.
<![if !supportLists]>·         <![endif]>High level of self-motivation and a demonstrated ability to commit to and follow through on projects
<![if !supportLists]>·         <![endif]>Strong organizational skills
<![if !supportLists]>·         <![endif]>Experience in, or strong interest in curriculum development and training a plus

Substitute Teacher Job Posting

SPECIAL EDUCATION (Substitute) TEACHER needed immediately for the Alternative Education Program for the Warren (PA) County School District to finish out the school year.  The program is through Beacon Light Behavioral Health Services.  Students are kept current with the academics that they would have been participating in at their home school; the computer program NovaNet is utilized for credit recovery.  The program currently has 13 students enrolled: six students are in Grades 10 – 12; one is in 7th Grade; and six are in the 9th Grade.  The Special Education Teacher would be responsible for Language Arts, Science, Independent Living Studies and Art.  One other teacher instructs the other academics; and two Behavioral Technicians are classroom aids that help keep the students on task and behaviorally appropriate.

Summer Environmental Education Internship

Dear Students:

 

An organization in Erie, PA committed to sustainability of the community’s natural resources through watershed protection and restoration efforts and the promotion of environmental stewardship is seeking an Environmental Education Intern for summer 2012.  This is an unpaid position for 15-20 hrs/week.

 

Responsibilities:

• Gain hands on teaching experience, addressing local environmental issues while working with children.

• Facilitate a small group of youth (ages 8-14) toward successful completion of a project, using the organization’s service leaning process.

• Collaborate and consult with staff to develop programs, coordinate field trips and guest speakers.

• Create and submit weekly lesson plans, daily logs and attendance rosters.

• Help with special events: Art Festival, Picnic, Discover Presque Isle, etc.

 

Qualifications include:

• Desire to work with at-risk youth, ages 8-14.

• Ability to work independently and with others on a team.

• Excellent communication skills and the ability to accept supervision and guidance.

• Ability to work with an ethnically and socio-economically diverse population.

• Criminal Background Check and Child Abuse Clearances required before the start of internship (Act 34 & 151).

• Ability to commit to internship for the summer (June – August).

• Have transportation to project sites (in the City of Erie).

Professional Development Reminder

As previously announced, Professor Whiteman will be conducting an overview of the new Pennsylvania Educator Certification Tests (PECT) for Special Education PreK-8 and Early Childhood PreK-4 tomorrow (Monday, April 16, 2012).  The Special Education Overview will begin at 6 p.m. and end at 6:50 p.m.; the Early Childhood Overview will begin at 7 p.m. and end at 8 p.m.

 

 

In addition to the overview information, all attendees will receive a printed copy of a practice test for each module and the answer key for each test. We will meet in Palumbo 2020 (please note that this a room change).

 

Professional development certificates will be available for pick-up at the front desk of the SOE Office suite on  Monday, April 23.
